Facebook was down!

Third time this week facebook was down. Reason being error at facebook server side and config values .detailed report below. This is what facebook had to say :

Early today Facebook was down or unreachable for many of you for approximately 2.5 hours. This is the worst outage we’ve had in over four years, and we wanted to first of all apologize for it. We also wanted to provide much more technical detail on what happened and share one big lesson learned.

The key flaw that caused this outage to be so severe was an unfortunate handling of an error condition. An automated system for verifying configuration values ended up causing much more damage than it fixed.

The intent of the automated system is to check for configuration values that are invalid in the cache and replace them with updated values from the persistent store. This works well for a transient problem with the cache, but it doesn’t work when the persistent store is invalid.

Today we made a change to the persistent copy of a configuration value that was interpreted as invalid. This meant that every single client saw the invalid value and attempted to fix it. Because the fix involves making a query to a cluster of databases, that cluster was quickly overwhelmed by hundreds of thousands of queries a second.

To make matters worse, every time a client got an error attempting to query one of the databases it interpreted it as an invalid value, and deleted the corresponding cache key. This meant that even after the original problem had been fixed, the stream of queries continued. As long as the databases failed to service some of the requests, they were causing even more requests to themselves. We had entered a feedback loop that didn’t allow the databases to recover.

The way to stop the feedback cycle was quite painful – we had to stop all traffic to this database cluster, which meant turning off the site. Once the databases had recovered and the root cause had been fixed, we slowly allowed more people back onto the site.

This got the site back up and running today, and for now we’ve turned off the system that attempts to correct configuration values. We’re exploring new designs for this configuration system following design patterns of other systems at Facebook that deal more gracefully with feedback loops and transient spikes.

We apologize again for the site outage, and we want you to know that we take the performance and reliability of Facebook very seriously.

When biscuits fall from the sky…

It was a dark night with a clear sky and a cool breeze to accompany it. Gazing around with a wandering mind while you are sitting on a window seat of a bus is always a muse. Having taken a halt at a place for some snacks with no lights lit in the bus, few meters apart, I saw few stray dogs sniffing, intently to find some food. Looking at them while munching biscuits, suddenly paved in a way for some thought. A thought which made me wonder, am I really enjoying this moment? Surely I had nothing interesting to answer it in a positive way. While acknowledging this thought I dropped a biscuit near one of the stray dog. With a surprise in its eyes, it took a look around to find out where did it come from and then it ate it. Without even a second thought, I dropped another biscuit and all the dogs gathered at that place to get a piece of it for themselves. Not only the dogs but also the people around wondered where did the biscuits come from and on the other hand, I enjoyed feeding those dogs while the darkly lit bus hid me. Within a very short time, I had something that would change the answer to the earlier question that came to my mind.

Sometimes even a small thing can change the way you feel. This same thought reminds me of an Italian movie in the late 90’s, named “La vita è bella” which means “Life is beautiful”.lifeisbeautiful

The whole movie revolves around a Jewish fellow in Italy in the Hitler’s reign. One would get a lot to take home with them after watching this movie. The fellow has a joyous perspective about whatever that was happening with him even in the derogatory regime of the Nazis and he uses his wit to protect his tender son from horrors of the holocaust by making his son’s stay in a concentration camp seem to be a game that he has planned as his birthday gift. A birthday game that would make him win a tank as the prize. Words might sound here little to explain the imagination and the will which he chose to show while living this perspective in real.

I guess this is where the whole knack of living lies. You never get to decide what comes your way but you always have a choice to decide how you choose to accept it. Viktor Frankl, a holocaust survivor, too says that humans always have the freedom of choice even in times of severe suffering. So, willing to see the brighter side of life helps you to overlook your circumstances and it serves you in enjoying the beauty of life. Having known this fact, even if you wonder at times about the dynamism in life and the reason for such questions to arise,it isn’t a thing to worry about because who knows maybe they might lead you to an another instance of an already known fact. Hence, è vero..la vita è bella This same thing is explained in the following lines :

ऐकलं आहे आयुष्य हे सुंदर आहे..
तरी प्रश्न पडतो कि आयुष्य नेमकं काय आहे..?
का असा हा प्रश्न पडावा..?
कदाचित त्यातूनच ऐकलेल्या गोष्टीचा अजुन एक संदर्भ मिळावा…

Desi Spiderman Song!

So as usual I was surfing the YouTube and came across this funny video. This version of spiderman was quite unique and had a different stoy line than other Spidey movies.

AN as usual Peter Parker, he stares the girl from distance and later hops with her.

The Spidey dose woo the girl and dances along

romances like BB

This desi spidey got some desi thumkkas and flatters the girl!

Then throws in some “USUAL-SPIDEY” dance steps. Meh!

Then there is an insane romantic/evil chase of the girl!

They take their story to a new level now 🙂

All good things come to an end! what can be better than showing Spideys latest power of being “GAYAB”.

No wonder others had to cry

Adventure Island – Mesmerising video games

I was surfing around the internet and I caught a glimpse of an awesome childhood memory, Adventure Island. Adventure Island was one of the beloved games. One of the favorite’s of the 90’s kids. The video games of that generation were different, they were simple with poor graphics and always a weird music in background. WHich to be truthful i loved!

In this game, we the player get to control Master Higgins, a young man who ventured to Adventure Island in the South Pacific after hearing that the Evil Witch Doctor kidnapped Princess Tina. Although she is referred as Princess Leilani in the English version. The Evil Witch Doctor may also be alternatively known as King Quiller, although this is not made clear in the game manual which lists it as a separate mystery enemy. Their names would be largely standardized in later localizations.

To rescue her, Higgins must survive a series of 32 stages. There are eight worlds called “areas”, which are divided four stages or “rounds” each, which are further divided into four checkpoints. When the player reaches the fourth round of each area, he must confront a boss at the end to continue to the next area. The game is completed when the player saves the girl after defeating the eighth and final form of the evil lord.

Games plus point was its electronic musicals. Weird but well enough to mesmerize you in the awesome childhood you had!
