10 Things to do When You’re Feeling Down

Most times you just feel oddly out of touch with everything and everyone, it might be what someone did or say wrong, but it let’s you feel downbeat. When you look at your own situation, be very aware of the simple fact that you are seeing it through your perspective. And that perspective is only one of a great many that exist

There are lots of ways to pick yourself back up, but you wouldn’t be worse for it by following the ways mentioned here.

1. Cry, Laugh or Hug Someone

Cry. It’s incredibly relieving. Like I let the sadness and s*** pour out of my eyes to be wiped away with a tissue and thrown in the trash. Then repeat the cycle again if I feel down whenever. Taking a nap helps right after too. People underestimate the value of releasing one’s sorrow. Watch a funny movie or spend time with someone who has a good sense of humor. Laughing releases tension and has a natural ability to heal. Hugs are such an easy way to express love and care without having to say a word.

Be sure you put your feet in the right place, then stand firm. Love yourself, whatever makes you different, and use it to make you stand out. You are a piece of the puzzle of someone else’s life. You may never know where you fit, but others will fill the holes in their lives with pieces of you. So stand tall.

Giving a genuine compliment is an amazing positivity boost! But compliments are not only good for the recipients they’re good for the people who give them as well. When you go out of your way to say something nice and give thoughtful praise to another person, it amplifies your self-confidence and nourishes your self-esteem. The act of giving compliments creates a virtuous circle. Telling someone that they have made a positive impact on your life, or that you admired the way they handled a situation, is a powerful gift. You reinforce their value in the world, while strengthening your relationship.

When you give, you are likely to get back. When you help others, you help yourself. Doing good things for others boosts your self-respect and makes you feel the satisfaction that comes from giving. Help someone else and expect nothing in return and see how it impacts your life with the fulfillment it brings. One of the most important reasons why people listen to music is because it relieves stress. A 2011 study published in Nature Neuroscience found that classical music can trigger the brain to release dopamine, which improves mood and can make you feel happier. Why do you think that people sometimes listen to music at the gym, especially rock or rap? It motivates them! When you listen to angry music, it gets your blood pumping, you get even more motivated to work out, and you perform better in your workout than you would without music.

6. Write yourself a letter.

This is an incredible exercise to do no matter how old you are. Writing a letter to yourself gives you insight and teaches you valuable life lessons that will stick with you long afterwards. Think of it as a time capsule. Give yourself advice stating what have you done wrong? What is your biggest regret? What makes you happy, what you want to achieve in life? Etc.

7. Plan your day

Plans are important in the long run. Working from a daily plan not only gives you the confidence to know which tasks are the highest priority, but also creates a measurable list to gauge your productivity throughout the day. Doing this each evening will help you sleep better knowing you have a plan in place.  If you wake up in the morning and find that things have changed, your priorities are clear and it will be easier to adjust your schedule.  If something is more important, just be flexible and revise your plan.

8. Do what your brain tells you can’t or shouldn’t

It’s not who you are that holds you back, it’s who you think you’re not. Whether you believe you can do a thing or not, you are right. If you hear a voice within you say “you cannot paint,” then by all means paint, and that voice will be silenced.

One of the best things for your emotional health is to practice gratitude regularly. It reduces stress and helps you realize what you have.

There are all kinds of deep breathing exercises out there. Find one you like and do it whenever you’re feeling stressed or overly emotional.

Just pick a goal, a goal you truly want to achieve, and take a clear-eyed look at your weaknesses, not so you’ll feel less confident, but so you can determine exactly what you need to work on. Then get to work. Celebrate small successes. Analyze your weaknesses. Keep going. As you gain skill, you’ll also gain a feeling of genuine confidence, one that can never be taken away, because you’ve earned it.
